Here we go again…

Windows again

Few more good slashdot threads

The first one discusses traits of veteran Unix admin. I think the traits mentioned in the article are questionable. And the second one is about why Unix servers should not be rebooted. While I think in certain circumstances reboots are warrantied, they should be done rarely. If you want to do reboots run Windows.

One more XKCD – cos it’s cool

It does, indeed…

I didn’t get the memo about smileys…

After a few years I am back on the job market. It is not exactly the greatest time to look for a new job, given the global economy is pretty much shit. But the time has come to move on. This time I have been looking for a gig in Central Europe. To my surprise there are quite a few companies interested. Good for me I guess…

Everything had been going smooth. However, while doing all the emailing and interviewing I have found out that I am getting old… Or something… I ended up dealing with 20-some, maybe late 20-ties agency recruiters.

No, I got no problem with age… Thanks for asking… Anyways, emails with agency recruiters and HR people are bland enough. This was the case as well. Until…. usually about the 5th email. Then, for some ungodly reason the agency recruiters started to stuff emoticons into emails! Business emails!

I don’t know, but to me it seems quite unprofessional to do this kind of stuff. We are discussing business matters. On the top of it, we have never met in real life. I don’t know you, you don’t know me. Until we do know each other, maybe things should remain at the professional level.

I will be the first one to speak up against super duper, stiff, cold, business only approach, but I think there still should be some line that should not be crossed. You get the drift. Wow, that sounded pretty stiff.

This smiley thing had been consistent across pretty much all agencies I have dealt with. Once I got past them and started talking to actual company people, things improved a little, but even there I had run across a few individuals that decided it was cool to send me emails filled with grins. Needless to say, I pretty much stayed away from those.

I guess, I did not get the memo about smileys… Maybe next time I am looking for a new gig, I will start application process with an email full of creepy grins. I wonder how far I will get with this approach…
